Pitfall 2: The Lost Caverns was released in 1984 by Activision, again designed by David Crane. It took the limits of the Atari 2600 hardware even further than its predecessor. The cartridge had a chip on it, mainly to handle multi-channel the music. The music was dynamic, responding to the player's actions. Pitfall 2 allowed you to explore both vertically and horizontally, and vertical levels loaded by scrolling the screen - pretty radical for the time. It also had save checkpoint (lost when the machine was turned off), so there were no life or time limits like in the first game. In addition to treasure, Pitfall Harry is looking for his pet mountain lion and his missing niece.
Despite being an amazing game, it didn't sell as well as the first once since Atari was busy poisoning the money tree with crap like ET and Pac Man. less info
