The importance and influence of Pitfall! can't be understated. Released in 1982 for the Atari 2600 by Activision and designed by David Crane, it was the most technologically advanced game ever produced for the system. Pitfall 2 took it even further, but the video game crash had pretty much happened by then. It featured non-flickering sprites, detailed characters, huge game worlds. The game sold millions of copies.
You guide Pitfall Harry through the jungle looking for treasure. There are 32 treasures hidden in the world, and you have 20 minutes to find them. The underground tunnels don't parallel the top world, and you could find short cuts to try and save time due to the 20 minute limit. You received points for the treasure. Some hazards would cost you one of your three lives, others would deduct points.
When I was younger, I thought this was mostly a timing game. Now that I'm older, I see that it's both a timing and a patience game. As this video shows, I've gained neither.
This is a bootleg copy of the game, released by CCE, an electronics company in Brazil. The only difference that I can see is the replacement of the world "Activision" with "CCE" at the bottom of the screen. less info
