With a $175 HD 4850 I can run the game maxed out @ 1680x1050 w/16xAF 8xAA, and it's smooth as butter.

I'm guessing your running on either a
Radeon 9200
OR a
Nvidia 4 series
Lol i have a radeon 9550 and i play very well source games. BUt i need to upgrade the videocard too

Do not buy an 8600, these line of cards suck. Best bang for buck are the low model 9600, like $180ish I think and should be reasonable.
Actually since my machine that record this demo a while back, has finally croaked. I'm in the process of buying a new machines anyways. It's time for an upgrade :))
You could get a videocard that would run TF2 well for $70. Buy a GeForce 8600 GT or Radeon HD 2600 Pro/XT.

run it in dx 81, itll run great.
To do so go to launch options and add -dxlevel 81
