Go into control panel,then display,and make sure your monitor is selected.
Failing that,make sure that you have a good enough enough graphics card,if the graphics card isn't found to be suitable then that could be a relevant error pointing towards that.

If it's your "dads" computer, 9 times out of 10 it's a crappy office computer,and has some kind of intel graphics card,the only 2 suitable for gaming and picked up by most gaming applications are Nvidia and ATI,if you don't have that in your dads computer (hence proving it's an office computer) then you can't play most 3D games is my uneducated guess.
