I use it only for editing, maybe you could do the same?

Start with vegas, go later on After Effects. When you know most of after effects and find own solutions for effects etc, go later on 3D with for example 3D Studio Max or Maya :)
But be patient it'll take a long time to learn it :P

start with some small random machinimas :)
If you'll start on a huge machinima project just like that you'll get bored pretty fast
