:) I disagree, Origano, that you need the newest shiniest equipment to make a popular video. The Return, Jimmy, and Big Blue Dress off the top of my head are still popular videos, and they were either made with WMM or could have been. Sure, making something shiny helps, but something truly special doesn't need the all the bells and whistles to be great. :)

For someone starting out with Machinima, especially, thinking if they can't use AE or have the most expensive program is an unnecessary deterrant. Go with the basics and rock our worlds, that's what I say! Can't expect every first machinima to be a BaronSoosdon orgasmic masterpiece of technology. :D

Actually I did buy them. Not all of us are 14 ;)

The wegame client, modelviewer, mapviewer are all free programs, so there you have a capture and model program. Plus, you have whatever games you already own to work in. The only thing you are missing is the editting program.

An alternative to the full versions of Vegas or Premiere are Vegas Movie Studio or Premiere Elements as well. They run about $50-75, so ask for one for a holiday or a Birthday. While I use Vegas 8 now, I used to use Premiere Elements, it was a great program. Start with Windows Movie Maker until you can get one of the others; it's limited but it is free.

Machinima isn't just about getting the latest program and making something flashy; make something with limited tools that is intriguing and original, and it will be well received regardless, imo.

I don't use a private server either; but I loaded a copy of WoW 2.4.3 on a different drive. Mapviewer will still work with that one.
