well, to your question.

Sony Vegas 8.0 (what I use)
Adobe Premier (recommended)
Particle Illusion (For extra effects)
Crazy Talk (If you wanna get technical with lip sync)
Fraps/WeGame (Duh)

If you're going for Vegas, all I can tell you is experiment. Just mess around with it a lot until you're confident with it. As for Adobe programs, I'd advise you to follow Oxhorn's Machinima Tutorials.
