  • The list of supported games has a very negative effect on the site.

WeGame does indeed support a big list of games. I realize that the purpose is to get people to download the WeGame software so that they can create videos of their games using the WeGame software, but due to the philosophical nature of WeGame, a lot of games and videos go unnoticed.

Some of us no doubt use Fraps or X-Fire to record the games that WeGame doesn't support. Those videos are then uploaded to the site under the tag "Misc Games".

The problem is obvious, Misc Games represents a huge category of unorganized content. Worse yet, the videos that are showcased on the homepage, which ARE supported, get the added bonus of being clearly labeled as the game the video was recorded from.

All of those other videos get the unsightly, "Misc Games" tag, most of which don't have the name of the game in the video's title, most of which probably suck... Of all the videos that don't suck, which are getting lost in this huge expanse of "Misc Games", they don't stand a chance making it to the homepage.

So what do I suggest? I suggest letting us type in the name of the game... I realize the reason you probably don't allow this to begin with is because you want videos to be organized and tidy.. and giving the user the ability to name the game... might not end up looking so good.. due to misspellings, lower case letters, or downright random names.

I suggest letting us name the games ANYWAY... but still keep some safeguards... for instance, right now... official WeGame supported games have RED letters. Make the user-named videos BLUE... or GREEN.. or something.

Then, as WeGame adds support for those games, simply change their tag from ..whatever color.. to Red and voila... you just incorporated several hundred videos into your organized list of supported games... Those hundred or so videos would have otherwise been lost in the huge expanse that is "Misc Games".

Yes, I know... i have a way of explaining things hugely in depth, but it has come to my knowledge that people just don't GRASP the main idea sometimes... so I have to drill it into your heads.

    Thanks,
    -Neil

  • Can something about the upload process be changed?

No, no they do NOT play fine in flash players. The ones with H.264 do not. I don't like being told that I'm wrong when I can supply proof.

Also, it does matter a lot. FLV was never intended for H.264/AAC. Forcing a container to use it will make hardware players designed to playback FLV choke especially if they don't even have H.264/AAC support. As for software players, they too will choke. Your FLV files with H.264/AAC don't play in my media player classic or VLC. I can't even extract the individual streams from the .FLV and convert it to .mp4 the way it's meant to be. Quite simply, .FLV is not meant to be used for H.264/AAC and you should switch to .mp4 since flash supports it.

Youtube uses .mp4 for H.264/AAC, you guys should too.

  • Can something about the upload process be changed?

Hi, a friend of mine and myself recently started uploading videos to WeGame, but something strange about the upload process confused us at first.

When you go to upload a video, you get the option of typing in the title, description and game while it's uploading, a true convenience but we managed to find a flaw in this design.

We uploaded some very large videos over night expecting them to be finished in the morning, but to our dismay, they never finished. The video uploaded just fine, but it was waiting for us to press "next" which unfortunately cannot be pressed until the entire video is finished uploading. No big deal, we woke up, pressed next expecting the video to be instantly available... after all, it did take all night to process the video... or did it?

The processing part didn't actually begin until we pressed next. What's worse, we didn't realize that's how it worked at first and the very first video we tried to upload was lost just because we closed the tab in firefox.

If there's any other way the upload process can be changed, I would suggest this:
    1. have the video title, description and name save automatically while the video is uploading or at least activate the next button early... or change it to "save" instead, so that it's self explanatory.

    2. Process the video immediately after it's finished uploading. Don't wait for us to press the "next" button, just process the video and wait for us to type in the title and description, that way if we don't get around to it until the next morning, no big deal, the video has been processed and it will be available the instant we add the info and press next.

    3. You should be able to see pending videos in your Profile or Control panel, whatever it's called... kind of like youtube. That way you can see the % of the conversion process and perhaps an ETA. This would make it way better.

If I had any other suggestions, they're a bit technical but here goes.

    1. Stop using the .flv extension for H.264/AAC. This is extremely bad since .flv is not the true container type for H.264/AAC.. also, since you managed to put it in the .flv container, that kinda makes it hacked and that breaks playback for FLV players on our computers... You guys do offer the ability to download the .flv version, at least make it playable by opting for the .mp4 extension since this is the true container type.

    2. Your H.264 bitrate is good, but the compression settings could be a lot better. For example, only 1 reference frame barely takes advantage of H.264's offerings. You might consider increasing it to 3. Also, CABAC would offer a potential 10-20% increase in quality at the expense of CPU cycles... I understand that most people have slow pcs but this should at least be experimented.

With all of this said, I must give you praise for being better than Youtube in at least 2 ways!

    1. The 20 minute cap is better than Youtube's 10 minute limit! w00t!
    2. High bitrate H.264 applies to videos of any resolution unlike Youtube which demands 720p tall videos for it. What a crappy deal breaker, youtube. :(

I hope these issues are looked into! :)

    Thanks,
    -Neil

  • Forum Feature Suggestions

Hi, you guys are using the .flv extension for your H.264 videos. I just thought I'd point out that .flv for H.264/AAC is retarded and creates problems... hell, I'm not even sure how you guys managed to get H.264/AAC into the FLV container.

I suggest that you use .mp4 instead because that's the most appropriate file extension to use for H.264/AAC. Plus, your .FLV videos with H.264/AAC will not play in any of my media players. Opting for the .FLV extension either by purpose or by accident is just wrong and you guys should fix it by changing over to .mp4.
