Burglary/robbery/theft deprives the owner of a tangible item. Downloading copyrighted works does not. It's an important distinction that has been made by law.

You can argue about which is worse, but they're not the same thing and will never be.

That said, you will also never be able to stop copyright infringement/piracy. It will be driven back to direct download systems (compromised servers running XDCC software) or to onion-routing networks (Tor) and darknets (Freenet).

I'm going to write a third party matchmaking server for people to use if they don't want to play on official servers or want to hold a LAN party. (EDIT: Turns out I'm not. I have no interest in playing this game after all.)

You can play using Hamachi if you don't want to forward ports.

The problem... you can't see other people's games in the game browser.

Decide who is going to host, and have them start the game. Everyone else needs to make a shortcut to borderlands.exe and add the host's Hamachi IP address to the end. e.g. borderlands.exe 5.6.7.8

Then just run Borderlands via the shortcut and it will drop you into their LAN game.
