A guide to CSS Sprays

Introduction

Using your own custom images, you can make sprays that allow you to "tag" walls or wherever you want while playing Counter-Strike, usually by pushing the default "T" key. The methods for making sprays for Counter-Strike 1.6 and Condition Zero are almost the same, while Counter-Strike: Source comes with a built in setting for using custom images.

Counter-Strike: Source Spray Setup

  • Download/Save picture: you can use any image as a spray as long as it follows this simple rules:
  • 256x256 pixels (not an exact requirement, but a mere suggestion for best image quality)
  • JPEG, .tga,.bmp or .vtf
  • Place the picture file in your cstrike folder located at:
  • C:\ProgramFiles\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\yourname\counter-strike source\cstrike
  • Start CS:S
  • Click on options
  • Click on Import Spray
  • Then on the cstrike folder
  • You will see the name of your spray file
  • Select it
  • Click open
  • Then click OK
  • Connect to your favorite server
  • Press T (default key) for spray and notice the picture.

Counter-Strike 1.6 & Condition Zero Setup


Hit open image button at top right corner.

Select your image and hit open.

if your picture is larger than the size that valve allows then hit adjust image button.

You can auto size your picture (recomended) or select your own size by using the drop down boxes provided.

Hit apply changes and convert to 256 colors at the bottom of the window.

Save tag.

Select export wad file and
hit ok.

Save this file in your cstrike/czero folder. Follow this path to get to it: C:/Program Files/steam/steamapps/youremail/counter-strike/cstrike (for CZ just replace with condition-zero/czero)

Name your file tempdecal.


Go to your cstrike/czero folder. Find the tempdecal.wad file. Right click on it and go to Properties.


Select Read Only and hit OK.
You may or may not have to delete the custom.hpk file in this folder. if this file reappears in your folder it is ok. Your spray may take a few rounds or even a map chenge before it will load into your game.
