lizardguy - most of the time, this is due to either bad mikes, bad soundcards, or, *most* commonly, bad volume settings. I find setting my playback to about a third volume, and my input (mikes, stereo mix, so on) to slightly less than that works for me, although obviously, my mike is not of amazing quality. But these settings generally improve quality, because you have much less mike and speaker overload, which causes most horrible sound problems for new machinimists.

BTW - I think it's great that this has been stickied, it's definitely one of the most useful threads here!
