One of the most favoured and despised aspects of both RPG's and MMORPGs, levelling is what "keeps us going" per se. With it, we have a treadmill to run on, and a goal to achieve. Without it, we are nothing, and games get stale extremely quickly.
But how would you improve the levelling system of current and future MMO's? WoW has already shifted mainstream MMO's from grinding to questing, but what else can be done?

I played many of the pre WoW MMORPGS and it used to be all about getting in a group and killing mobs you simply couldnt solo for a few hours each evening, It was lots of fun imho. The average age of the playerbase was nearing on 30 back then.
WoW made MMORPGS easy and fast, so easy that 6-8 year olds are playing and grouping, I was grouped with a 60 hunter lastnight that just had his 8th bday! the focus has shifted to soloing for levels and grouping for gear, which is imho quite sad.
Whats wows average player age 20?
Anyone designing a new MMORPG that makes one of the big 4 sologrind soloquest groupgrind(instances) groupquest(instances) faster than the rest is shooting themself in the foot! the only way to do it now is to make em all the same-ish xp per hour.
Deep down inside i really hate blizzard for their "if they complain enough we will change the game to make them happy, even if its completely retarded" stance, People are used to getting what they want because of blizzard. Priests are DPS now, Druids are raid MT's hunters are overly-overpowered, Epics are free.
God i hope that doesnt become the industry norm.
Sorry for getting twisted off topic abit :P
I got to level 10 on Nethack, I died due to poisoning from eating a Kobolds remains. Best Game Ever.

RPGs are kind of a grindfest but in an MMO you're more likely to band together with others to do it. Being with others makes things less boring (and anything wild that goes down will only bind the group closer together....or make for hilarious videos)

I mainly like anything that requires a few levels up (A.K.A Call of duty 4 even if it doesn't have that enough skill) Then takes skill to level up

Try Battleground Europe...its a MMO, there's no leveling per se, but you do missions for ranks so you can use the newer equipment (sniper rifles, light machinegun, spitfire IX etc). Of course it does require skill and time. In my 15 years of online gaming, its the only MMO i've played for 6 straight.

Ye. but i like when its leveling in FPS like "kill 400 bad guys and then go up rank" or something, thats what keeps me going for most games, CoD 4 is another great example of leveling up sytem in FPS (multiplayer)
