Who has a Linux Based OS?

Among experienced Linux users (such as myself), Ubuntu is almost universally hated because of how dumbed down it is. Generally, the more you use an operating system, the more you learn about its internal functions. Ubuntu takes the opposite approach, hiding how things work to ease the learning curve for new users. Also, its stupid names prevent its serious adoption by companies (and I'm assuming most people in general). Gutsy Gibbon? No, thanks.

I do myself have a dualboot with Windows Vista and Fedora8 using grub as boot loader. And as said before the hardest part of getting a dualboot is to resize your partition. I used PowerQuests Partition magic (http://www.soft32.com/download_151.html) to do the job for me, and it took a day to move and resize my harddrive. But it was well worth it. I was suprised by how small ammount of resources the system took. A fully loaded Fedora8 with Desktop effects and nVidia drivers installed takes only 224MB of ram. While vista takes atleast 770MB. Now I could go on the whole day talking about everything that Fedora does better, so I'm stopping now. It's 4am in the morning so it would be a long day for me. I installed Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) and fired up WoW, after having my windows ntfs drive force mounted. Tough I experienced some really crappy framerate there. Do you guys get decent framerates in windows games run trough Wine? If you do I guess I have to get a new nVidia driver. Or do you use any other method to run Windows games like HL2? |

A few days? Ubuntu 7.10 has a built in partitioning device that does all the work. I got dual boot set up in under 30 minutes. |

Mastrmind is probably referring to gparted (Gnome Partition Editor), which most Gnome-based distros come with. :)

Yea that's it. I have a question for you, Bill. Do you know how to get the mic working in Ubuntu? I tried googling but I couldn't find anything. |

I had tons of problems with ALSA and everything sound-related until I started using the latest kernel source (2.6.24.1 at the time). Sometimes, I would unplug my headphones, but the sound wouldn't start coming out of my speakers. Other times, I'd plug in my headphones, and the sound would continue coming out of my speakers! ALSA support in the latest kernel source is amazing and fixed all my sound problems. It's probably wise to update anyways, since you might be vulnerable to the vmsplice exploit.

I just deleted the message above. Original Message to MasterMind for the first page: "You truly think so? Have you tried the full desktop effeccts with Compiz installed? How about the Add/Remove Software? :D I'll just stop talking. I sound like a car salesman. :P" I thought you didn't want to use Ubuntu. :D Anyway, I love Ubuntu and all but I am gonna go try another Linux version. I want to try them all....or most of them at least. :P How are you all going with Ubuntu? Having fun?

I still haven't gotten the sound input to work, that's all. Compiz Fusion rocks! |

Yeah Compiz Fusion is alright, but most things in it are just to make it look pretty. Compiz is not really useful, other than the rotating cube bit that is sweet and useful. I have: Dual boot of Ubuntu and XP on my laptop. FreeBSD installed on an old PC. PCBSD installed on another old PC (PCBSD was the first windows-alternative I installed and it was a breeze) Windows XP on 2 other older PC's. A couple of older laptops with Windows 98 and Windows 3.11 (:D and Windows Server NT (I know stfu) installed on an old server (by old I mean 1990's relic with 4gb hard drive, tape drive backup system, et cetera) |
