I have Ubuntu installed as a dualboot with my Vista on my laptop. I have the full desktop effects thanks to a very helpful post. (Link will be available upon request.) Anyone know how to install the latest MadWifi on Ubuntu? Everyone makes tutorials on other versions of linux so it doesn't work that well for me.

I only use Windows on my computer at the WeGame office... My 2.2ghz Core 2 Duo, 4gb ddr2 Lenovo Thinkpad T61 is running Debian stable (Etch), as is the dual quadcore 1.86ghz Xeon (8 * 1.86), 8gb ddr2 server under my desk at the office. My dedicated server that hosts all of my websites and other stuff in Virginia is running Ubuntu Server or something.

DJK does the dual boot work good? I was thinking of trying that out.

it works perfectly but it just doesn't work if you're just planning to mess around, get VMWARE. if you seriously want to start working with linux get a extra computer. Dual boots are annoying cause you want to do use both operating systems at the same time, which will force you to chose. so in the end you'll have booted linux twice and never look at it anymore

I agree with Proz's advice. Get a separate computer if you want to mess with other operating systems than Windows.

Proz: or you avoid windows for weeks on end like I used to o/ But dual-booting is a joke for anything serious, it's easy enough to find the old parts to build a separate linux system if you really want to learn it properly...

I agree. We currently have a linux gibson upstairs, that my brother uses to practice with all linux based shit. I used to have a live-cd for Ubuntu here, but I realised that the amounts of times I would REALLY use it as a fail-safe would be worthless. |

Dual-boot is a near-dream on my laptop. The installation is a piece of cake. The hardest thing was getting Vista to shrink my hard drive to make a new partition. My favorite thing is that I am able to boot both of them at the same time, kinda. If I boot up Vista then put Vista in hibernate I can start Ubunutu while Vista is still in hibernation. I haven't tested on hibernating Ubuntu though. Once I shut down Ubuntu and go back to Vista, Vista wakes up from hibernation as if nothing happened. It is faster that way compared to a clean boot. :D Anyway, who cares if you really are serious or not. With Ubuntu, you can still run Windows progams. I just ran HL2 under Ubuntu (7.10 Gutsy). You just gotta try Ubuntu and see how incredible it is. There is more to Ubuntu than you think. Think of it this way, Ubuntu has everything Vista has with less CPU/RAM requirements (32MB minimum, 512 MB recommended; 300Mhz minimum, 500Mhz recommended ) with tons more stuff and is completely customizable. The support for Ubuntu is the best I have seen. Go to ubuntu.com and take a look at their forum and see how many people are there to help out. Now, go to microsoft.com and take a look at their support page. Microsoft's support is absolutely useless. You can't even report a bug to them without having the program crash on you. Speaking of crash, Ubuntu never ever crashed on me under a stress test with 36 tabs in Firefox open (and saved) games running on another desktop (Ubuntu allows you to have unlimited desktops to eliminate clutter; you simply rotate the screen and voila) while updating Ubuntu on a third screen. I even made 1000 (yes a thousand) rows and 16 columns of desktop screens and yet it still doesn't lag even with full desktop effects enabled. I can't explain how amazing Ubuntu is. I also realized how freaking BUGGY Vista really is. Note: Sorry if this is too long. It just has unlimited things to do on there. (I'm even on Ubuntu right now typing this.) It is just flatout insane with Ubuntu. :D

I just set up dual boot Ubuntu 7.10 on my computer a few days ago. It's cool and all, but I don't really have a need for it. |
