Vista or XP?

Anyway, I'm thinking of reformatting, but I'm not sure if I should install XP or Vista (I have the option for either). What do you PC gamers recommend? I mean, I heard that XP used to get better performance, but now SP1 is out for Vista and I heard there's now little or no difference between the two in game performance.

I'd still stick with XP for usability reasons. No reason to switch to a new OS that doesn't offer anything to you, especially not if it means relearning it.

Yeah I mean, I'm currently using Vista now and I like it, but I'm going to be reformatting soon and when I mentioned this to my friend, he said I should go back to XP because of stability, usability, etc.

Ah, well, if you already use Vista, there's really no reason not to stop using it. I use both Vista and XP for testing here and I've found Vista to actually be the more stable system. Granted, testing a client doesn't really count as regular use, but in any case, it just seems to handle crashes better, etc. Of course, I use a mac myself :D

Ah really? Interesting! Yeah, I was actually gonna switch back to XP after what my friend was saying, but then I saw some benches after the new SP1 for Vista and it even beat XP in game performance in some cases. So as you said, since I'm already using Vista, when I reformat I might as well continue to use it. Haha really? But you're a gamer too right? How's the gaming on a mac?

Uhhhh, there aren't many options for gaming on mac. It's pretty much World of Warcraft and... The Sims? I don't play too much anymore these days anyways, too busy with work. When I do get a chance to play, it's usually on consoles.

There's quite a lot of Mac games now - EA are releasing Mac versions of a lot of their games thanks to TransGaming Cider. C&C 3 was fun to play on my macbook pro for a while. There's also most of the id Software series on Mac, and I think a lot of the Unreal games had ports as well. If you're using Vista now and you have a modern enough computer I'd stick with it. There's no advantage to going backwards... Usability is better on Vista once you get used to how it works (and learn to use your Profile folder properly). Stability is no worse than XP - they're both Windows NT still. The only reason to go back is if your computer sucks and can't run it well... Hopefully in the next few months we get some more DX10 games to play on it too, lol We moved all client development to Vista at the start of April and haven't had any problems with it. It isn't as good as Mac OS but it's a lot better than XP overall. It does love to chew up resources though so I wouldn't run it on anything slow...

Awright, I think it's settled then. I'll just reformat and install Vista again. :D Thanks for the info though

You could try to have a Linux partition on it. Dual-boot it and you won't regret it. I have a dual-boot on mine with Ubuntu and Vista. A bit off-topic, but it is because the question has already been answered. :P

Hmm... Well, I mean Linux sounds cool and all, but I guess I don't really see the reason for buying a whole new OS since I've already got two others =P But what are the advantages of Linux?
